The War Atrocities series, my first series using oil paint, began when, as a child, my father and I would watch vintage World War II documentaries, a war in which he was directly engaged for its entirety. At this impressionable age and for all my life later, the images and sounds of war, the horrific suffering it caused, was something I felt a need to wash my soul of and, in some way, provide a reminder of how cruel humankind can be to itself.
Himler Hause was inspired by the Stephen Spielberg movie, Schindler’s List, and was included in the sub-series, SL.
A picture of Himler was posted in Time magazine and showed the SS general at a Nazi rally with his daughter at his knees. I posed my own children upon my patio floor in the sprawled pose of spirits, having left their bodies desecrated in ovens. The rectangle to the backside of H is a fireplace made of marble. I thought putting a fire in the fireplace opening was too obvious.
